  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups oats (quick cooking or old fashioned)
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • water (as needed)

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening and sugars in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in water and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. In another bowl, mix flour, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Gradually add to the creamed mixture and fold in oats.
  4. Drop tablespoon-sized balls onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 350°F for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Cool on wire racks.
  5. Prepare the icing by mixing milk and powdered sugar; add water to achieve desired consistency.
  6. Dip cooled cookies into the glaze and let excess drip off before setting aside to set.
