  • 1/2 cup red velvet cake crumbs (from the cupcake centers)
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 12 tbsp red food coloring (for a vibrant, glossy red hue)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 34 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 23 tbsp milk or heavy cream
  • A few drops of ivory or peach food coloring (adjust for a pale skin-tone effect)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Candy fangs or small dots of red Vegan gelatin (for puncture marks)
  • Red syrup or edible red gel (for 'blood' drips)
  • Straws (watch out – they are not eatable)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. Cream softened butter and sugar until fluffy; add eggs one at a time, then vanilla and red food coloring.
  3. In another bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, and salt; gradually mix into wet ingredients alternating with buttermilk.
  4. Fill muffin cups 2/3 full and bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  5. Prepare filling by combining cake crumbs with sweetened condensed milk and melted butter; add red food coloring.
  6. Hollow out cupcakes and fill centers with the red velvet mixture.
  7. Make buttercream by beating softened butter with powdered sugar; add milk and vanilla until smooth.
  8. Frost each cupcake and decorate with candy fangs or edible gel for added effect.
